Mainboard Reflow
« on: October 20, 2013, 10:58:02 am »
Hey. Just wondering if anyone here has tried, or got, a reflow on a mainboard? My lappy has developed the green screen issue. As such my only computer access is at work  >:( Don't have a workbench so getting it looked at next week. The GPU or the chipset appears to have fallen over. Hopefully the GPU is just at fault. However, not sure if a reflow would be worth the hassle, especially as it would probably cost a 100 quid or so. Should have a XP desktop up and running next week, but if anybody knows what sort of success rate or not reflowing has, I would be interested to know.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you Trans. I've never done one myself or had the chance to experience one first hand. I did do a little research and results seem to be a mixed bag, some success and some failures. I suppose that if you get to the point that you're pretty sure the board is the issue and you don't have any other options, it might be worth a shot just for the experience. Sorry I can't help more than that.

No worries. The end result was that lady luck was shining on me. It transpired that I had been very close to frying the GPU chipset. Silly me really, I do not take such care with laptops  :o Anyway, underneath the chipset, part of the board got a lil too bit hot and leaving marks. The HSF on the 9800 failed, desite my fan test util (name escapes me) testing positive on fan flow and rpm's. Erroneous readings almost cost me. New chipset onboard coupled with the new HSF. Running a little bit flaky under load, but I hope that burning process will help.
