2.0 Troubleshooting, Repair and Maintenance

2.3 Given a scenario, determine the troubleshooting methods and tools for printers

  • Manage print jobs

Whenever you print a document, that document enters a print queue, and waits to be printed. To open the print queue, double-click the printer icon in the system tray. The print queue lists the documents waiting to be printed in the order in which they are to be printed. For each document, details such as owner, number of pages, document size, and time submitted are shown. From the print queue, the following tasks can be performed by right-clicking the desired print job:

    • Cancel - Deletes the selected print job from the print queue
    • Pause / Resume - Stops and restarts the selected print job at the same point
    • Restart - Restarts the selected print job from the beginning

  • Print spooler

A print spooler is software that temporarily stores print jobs on the computer hard disk or in memory until the printer is ready to print them. This buffering technique allows the processor to perform other operations while the printing is performed in the background.

  • Printer properties and settings

  • Print a test page

A printer test page can be printed to ensure that text and graphics are printed correctly. A test page also displays information, such as the printer name, model, and driver software version.
