1.7 Distinguish between the different display devices and their characteristics
- Projectors, CRT and LCD
- LCD technologies
- Resolution (e.g. XGA, SXGA+, UXGA, WUXGA)
A measure used to describe the number of pixels displayed in the entire screen.
- XGA - 1024 × 768
- SXGA+ - 1400 × 1050
- UXGA - 1600 × 1200
- WUXGA - 1920 × 1200
- Contrast ratio
The difference between the brightest white and the darkest black of the display. The higher the ratio, the better.
- Native resolution
The resolution at which a monitor is designed to display.
- Connector types
- VGA
Three row 15 pin connector used to connect the monitor.
- HDMi
A compact 19 pin audio/video interface for transferring encrypted uncompressed digital audio/video data.
- S-Video
A 4, 7, or 9-pin Mini-DIN connector and cable that transmits video signals by dividing the video information in to two separate signals.
- Component / RGB
Typically a 3.5mm jack used to carry an analog video signal that is separated into multiple component channels. Yellow for composite video, and white and red for stereo audio.
- DVI pin compatibility
A high quality cable that typically transmits digital signals but is also capable of analog transmission.
- Settings
- Refresh rate
The number of times a second that a screen redraws the image. The higher the rate, the smoother the image.
- Resolution
A measure used to describe the number of pixels displayed in the entire screen.
- XGA - 1024 × 768
- SXGA+ - 1400 × 1050
- UXGA - 1600 × 1200
- WUXGA - 1920 × 1200

The use of multiple display devices.
- Degauss
The process of removing unwanted magnetic fields from inside a CRT monitor.
