1.7 Distinguish between the different display devices and their characteristics

  • Projectors, CRT and LCD

  • LCD technologies

    • Resolution (e.g. XGA, SXGA+, UXGA, WUXGA)

A measure used to describe the number of pixels displayed in the entire screen.

      • XGA - 1024 × 768
      • SXGA+ - 1400 × 1050
      • UXGA - 1600 × 1200
      • WUXGA - 1920 × 1200

    • Contrast ratio

The difference between the brightest white and the darkest black of the display. The higher the ratio, the better.

    • Native resolution

The resolution at which a monitor is designed to display.

  • Connector types

    • VGA

Three row 15 pin connector used to connect the monitor.

    • HDMi

A compact 19 pin audio/video interface for transferring encrypted uncompressed digital audio/video data.

    • S-Video

A 4, 7, or 9-pin Mini-DIN connector and cable that transmits video signals by dividing the video information in to two separate signals.

    • Component / RGB

Typically a 3.5mm jack used to carry an analog video signal that is separated into multiple component channels. Yellow for composite video, and white and red for stereo audio.

    • DVI pin compatibility

A high quality cable that typically transmits digital signals but is also capable of analog transmission.

  • Settings

    • Refresh rate

The number of times a second that a screen redraws the image. The higher the rate, the smoother the image.

    • Resolution

A measure used to describe the number of pixels displayed in the entire screen.

      • XGA - 1024 × 768
      • SXGA+ - 1400 × 1050
      • UXGA - 1600 × 1200
      • WUXGA - 1920 × 1200

    • Multi-monitor

The use of multiple display devices.

    • Degauss

The process of removing unwanted magnetic fields from inside a CRT monitor.
